United States expands sanctions on Iran and its financial networks
The U.S. Treasury announced a new sanctions package targeting eight individuals, six companies and additional financial intermediaries linked to Iran. The measures freeze assets under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit U.S. persons from dealing with the listed entities, aiming to curb Iran’s ability to finance its regional activities and alleged weapons programs. The sanctions were issued after the Treasury cited Iran’s recent attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded on X, stating that Iran has upheld its commitments under the nuclear memorandum of understanding, contrasting the U.S. move with what he called a violation of the agreement’s Article 9. Tehran rejected the accusations, calling the sanctions unilateral and unlawful, and warned they would harm the Iranian economy and civilian population.
