U.S. median household income hits record $87,460 in 2025
U.S. Census Bureau data for 2025 shows that real median household income reached a record high of $87,460, a 2.6% increase from the previous year. This marks the highest inflation-adjusted level since records began in 1967 and represents the first time median income has exceeded pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
The official poverty rate also declined by 0.5 percentage points to 10.2%, while the official child poverty rate fell to a historic low of 13.4%. However, the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which accounts for government benefits and cost-of-living adjustments, remained stable at 13.1%.
Economic gains were unevenly distributed. While the top 10% of earners saw a 1.7% income increase, the bottom 10% experienced a slight decline. Income inequality remains significant, with the top decile earning over 13 times more than the bottom decile. Additionally, women's median earnings rose by 3.2%, narrowing the gender pay gap, while men's earnings saw no statistically significant change.
