Concurrently, the official poverty rate declined to a record low of 10.2%, affecting approximately 34.5 million people, with the official child poverty rate also reaching a historic low of 13.4%. While the Supplemental Poverty Measure remained stable at 13.1%, analysts noted that the official poverty rate only captures pre-tax cash income and excludes non-cash assistance such as SNAP, Medicaid, or housing subsidies. Additionally, while the uninsured rate remained near historic lows, 26.7 million people lacked health coverage at some point during the year.

Economic gains were noted as unevenly distributed. The top 10% of earners saw a 1.7% increase, whereas the bottom 10% experienced a slight decline. While women’s median earnings rose by 3.2%, narrowing the gender pay gap, men’s earnings showed no statistically significant change.

Despite these indicators, economic challenges persist ahead of midterm elections. The year-over-year inflation rate is currently higher than when President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, driven largely by rising energy costs. According to AAA data, the average price for a gallon of regular gas increased from $3.20 to $4.47, while diesel prices rose from $3.71 to $6.53.
