United States imposes sanctions on International Criminal Court

The United States has imposed sweeping institutional sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), aiming to block its assets and disrupt its operational capacity. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures, stating that the US will prohibit transactions with the court to defend American sovereignty and prevent the prosecution of US citizens, including military personnel and political leaders. Rubio warned that the US would continue to dismantle the court if its concerns are not addressed.

The sanctions include a six-month grace period for US companies to wind down business with the ICC. While the US Treasury Department has issued certain exemptions for essential activities—such as telecommunications, software, and medical services—the move is intended to isolate the institution. The decision follows the ICC's issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Benjamin Netanyahu, and stems from long-standing US opposition to the court's jurisdiction over non-member states.

The ICC has condemned the sanctions as an “assault on the rule of law and the foundations of the international legal order.” The United Nations and several international allies, including members of the European Union, Canada, Japan, and Ireland, have expressed deep concern or outright condemnation, warning that the move undermines international criminal justice and the global legal framework.
