United States increases Middle East military presence amid aid reallocation disputes
The United States is significantly increasing its military presence in the Middle East and facing domestic legislative challenges regarding foreign aid. Approximately 9,000 personnel, including sailors and Marines, are being deployed to the region alongside the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group. This movement occurs as President Donald Trump has not ruled out renewed airstrikes against Iran following the November midterm elections.
To protect regional energy infrastructure, the U.S. has also deployed Patriot air defense systems to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. These deployments aim to reassure allies against potential Iranian retaliation targeting oil and gas facilities.
Simultaneously, the administration is facing opposition in Congress over the reallocation of $52 million in military aid. Originally intended for European and Middle Eastern nations, including Slovakia and North Macedonia, these funds were redirected to Latin American projects to combat drug trafficking. Lawmakers, including Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks, have challenged this move, alleging it violates Congressional bans and regulations regarding the intended use of budget funds, particularly as some of the redirected money was earmarked for Ukraine support.
