United States national debt surpasses $40 trillion milestone

The United States national debt has surpassed the $40 trillion milestone, a significant increase from approximately $20 trillion in 2016. Treasury data indicates the debt is growing at a rapid pace, with some estimates suggesting an increase of nearly $7 billion every day.

Rising interest costs are a primary driver of fiscal concern. Annual net interest payments on the debt have exceeded $1 trillion, making interest the second-largest federal expenditure, trailing only Social Security. This burden now exceeds spending on national defense, Medicaid, and other major discretionary programs.

Economic analysts and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget have warned that this scale of borrowing is unsustainable and risks a dangerous debt spiral. The Congressional Budget Office projects the debt-to-GDP ratio will rise from 101% in 2026 to 120% by 2036 if current trends continue. The total debt represents approximately $117,000 per American citizen.
