United States national debt approaches $40.4 trillion

The United States national debt has reached approximately $40.4 trillion, following a nearly $400 billion increase over a two-month period. According to U.S. Treasury data, the debt surpassed the $40 trillion milestone on August 19, 2026, and grew by roughly 1% since late August.

Fiscal year 2026 saw a federal budget deficit of $1.99 trillion, an increase of $217 billion over the previous year. Government revenues totaled $5.4 trillion against $7.4 trillion in expenditures. Debt servicing costs have also risen significantly, reaching a record $1.36 trillion, a 12% increase.

Annual interest payments on the debt are approximately $970 billion, a figure that now exceeds U.S. defense spending. The Congressional Budget Office expects federal debt to reach 120% of GDP by 2036. Additionally, the Peterson Institute for International Economics suggests that without spending or tax reforms, the national debt could reach $50 trillion within six years.
