US pressures EU to align supply chain and green rules with trade deals
The United States has renewed pressure on the European Union to align its environmental and human rights supply chain regulations with the EU-US trade agreement established in 2025. US Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, stated that the extraterritorial scope of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) creates undue burdens that harm the competitiveness of American companies in the European market.
Washington has also accused the EU of enabling Chinese evasion of US tariffs and is pushing for amendments to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). In response, European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta emphasized that the EU’s regulatory autonomy and legal framework are not subject to negotiation, though she noted that discussions regarding both tariff and non-tariff issues remain constructive.
While the EU has previously softened some policies, such as anti-deforestation and methane rules, the US maintains that these adjustments are insufficient to address the concerns of American businesses and workers.
