United States provides $1 million in forensic aid to Nepal flood victims
The United States has approved an additional $1 million in aid to assist Nepal in identifying victims of recent devastating floods, which have resulted in over 1,300 deaths and approximately 5,000 people missing since August 26. This new funding, provided through the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, is specifically intended to support the Nepal Police with forensic resources, including DNA analysis kits.
FBI forensic specialists are currently working alongside Nepali authorities to provide specialized humanitarian expertise in disaster victim identification. This effort aims to provide answers to the families of all victims, including the 70 Americans reported missing.
Total US State Department assistance for the disaster response has now exceeded $5 million. This includes $3 million allocated to the World Food Program for food and logistics to support 10,000 households for three months. Additional funds are being distributed through Catholic Relief Services ($685,000) and organizations including Jhpiego, FHI-360, and UNICEF ($365,000) to address shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene needs.
In addition to financial aid, the US military has delivered 5,000 specialized recovery supplies, 500 first aid kits, stretchers, and front-end loaders to support Nepal-led search and rescue operations. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund has received over Rs 2.73 billion in domestic and institutional donations.
