United States public debt exceeds 100% of GDP for first time since 1946
United States public debt held by the public reached approximately 32.2 trillion USD at the end of fiscal year 2026, representing 100.03% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This marks the first time this ratio has surpassed the 100% threshold at the close of a fiscal year since 1946, following World War II.
The fiscal year 2026 deficit reached nearly 2 trillion USD, equivalent to roughly 6.2% of GDP. This deficit was driven by federal spending of approximately 7.4 trillion USD against total revenues of about 5.4 trillion USD. While the total federal debt, including intra-governmental holdings, has exceeded 40 trillion USD, economists focus on the debt held by the public to assess external fiscal obligations to investors, financial institutions, and foreign governments.
Although the current debt-to-GDP ratio remains below the 106% peak recorded in 1946, the milestone has raised concerns regarding long-term budget deficits, rising interest costs, and the sustainability of U.S. financial stability.
