United States pushes new diplomatic effort to end Sudan civil war

The U.S. State Department announced on June 24 that senior adviser for Africa and the Arab world, Massad Boulos, met with UN Special Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto. The two discussed the ongoing “Quintet” facilitation process and a civilian‑led inclusive political dialogue aimed at ending the fratricidal war that has raged in Sudan since April 15, 2023. Boulos said the United States will address the United Nations Security Council on June 26, urging a humanitarian cease‑fire, unrestricted aid access and a transition to civilian governance.

The diplomatic push seeks to build on existing efforts to secure a durable peace, coordinate humanitarian assistance and support a negotiated political settlement among Sudanese factions.
