Nicaragua rejects U.S. ambassador, prompting diplomatic recall

Diplomatic tensions between the United States and Nicaragua have escalated following Nicaragua's rejection of Natasha Franceschi as the U.S. ambassador-designate. In response, the U.S. State Department has recalled its chargé d'affaires, Elias Baumann, to Washington for consultations. U.S. officials characterized the rejection as a sign of an unwillingness to engage in productive dialogue and criticized the Ortega-Murillo administration for hypocrisy regarding mutual respect.

The U.S. has also issued warnings to investors in Nicaragua, citing a lack of predictable rule of law and risks associated with the confiscation of private property, including reports of nine luxury homes belonging to U.S. retirees being seized. Additionally, the State Department expressed ongoing concern regarding the repression of religious freedom in the country.

In El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele announced a significant policy shift, proposing the early and conditional release of approximately 50% of prisoners currently held under the state of exception. The plan aims to distinguish between those who committed serious crimes and those who provided minor assistance to gangs under duress. Human rights activists suggest this move may be an implicit admission of errors regarding mass detentions during the government's anti-gang campaign.
