United States says it will not renew USMCA in its current form

The United States has announced that it will not agree to a renewal of the United StatesMexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA, also known as T‑MEC) in its present configuration. The statement creates uncertainty about the pact, which is scheduled to remain in force until 2036 after an annual review process. Mexican officials, including Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard and President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum, have emphasized that the treaty is still valid and that Mexico will work to secure a more favorable tariff relationship with the United States. A meeting to review the agreement has been set, and the Atlantic Chamber and other trade groups have outlined expectations for the upcoming review. The U.S. position could lead to renegotiations or a lapse of the agreement if a new format is not reached.
