Syria removed from US state sponsor of terrorism list
The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, ending a designation that has been in place since 1979. The decision follows the conclusion of a mandatory 45-day congressional review period.
Alongside the removal of Syria, the US Department of State revoked the designation of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization. This move is part of a broader policy shift by the Trump administration to ease sanctions and encourage economic reintegration following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad government in December 2024.
US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, stated that the decision aims to foster international investment, trade, and political stability in Syria. The removal of the designation is expected to lift restrictions on US foreign assistance, defense exports, and certain financial transactions. Once the change is fully implemented, only Iran, North Korea, and Cuba will remain on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.
