United States removes Syria from state sponsors of terrorism list

The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, ending a designation that has been in place since 1979. Following the completion of legal processes, the U.S. Department of State issued a notice through the Treasury Department confirming the removal.

This decision follows executive actions taken by President Donald Trump to ease restrictions on Syria and support its reintegration into the international financial system and global economy. The move aims to assist in reconstruction efforts following years of conflict. This shift aligns with a previous decision by the European Union in May to lift economic sanctions as part of a gradual approach to support Syria's economic recovery and political transition.

Previously, the terrorism designation imposed various sanctions, including bans on arms sales, defense equipment, and restrictions on foreign aid and dual-use technologies. With Syria's removal, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba remain on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.
