United States removes Syria from state sponsors of terrorism list
The United States has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism after 47 years. This decision, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aims to remove barriers to private sector investment and facilitate Syria's reintegration into the global economy.
As part of this shift, the U.S. also removed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its list of global terrorist organizations. HTS, led by Syria's new president Ahmed al-Sharaa, was formerly an Al-Qaeda affiliate before Sharaa broke ties with the network in 2016.
