U.S. Launches Europe Force Posture Review to Shift NATO Burden
The Pentagon opened a six‑month Europe Posture Review on July 27‑28, announced by Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby on X. The review assesses roughly 80,000 U.S. troops stationed across Europe and is intended to move primary responsibility for conventional defence to NATO allies. It aligns the force posture with the 2025 National Security Strategy and the 2026 National Defense Strategy and follows a pledge made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the NATO defence‑ministerial in Brussels.
The review will examine base access, over‑flight rights and other criteria, and will involve consultations with Congress and European governments. While no immediate troop reductions were announced, the Pentagon is already withdrawing up to 5,000 soldiers from Germany, has ended a rotational brigade mission in Romania, and cancelled an armored brigade deployment to Poland. President Donald Trump has directed an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, a move not yet implemented. The assessment is seen as the administration’s most concrete step toward shifting the burden of European defence to partner nations.
