United States reviews European military presence, 39,000 troops in Germany affected

The United States Department of Defense announced the start of a Europe Posture Review, following statements by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at a NATO ministerial meeting in June. Under Secretary of War Elbridge Colby said the review aims to shift the primary responsibility for conventional defence to European allies.

The assessment could lead to a significant reduction of U.S. forces and assets stationed in Europe, including combat aircraft, ships, refueling aircraft, submarines and bombers. German officials note that roughly 39,000 U.S. soldiers are currently deployed in Germany, which may be impacted by the review. The move reflects a broader strategic shift toward prioritising defense of the United States and deterrence of China, as outlined in the defence strategy released under former President Donald Trump.

The Pentagon expects the review to be completed within six months, though timelines could be adjusted. Critics within NATO argue that some member states have relied on a "free‑rider" approach, prompting the United States to reassess its forward‑presence commitments across the continent.
