The United States Department of State has revoked nearly 900 visas as part of an intensified crackdown on “birth tourism.” This practice involves foreign nationals traveling to the U.S. primarily to give birth so their children can obtain automatic citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

Since the launch of a specialized task force in mid-August, officials have identified patterns of fraud where travelers misrepresent their intentions on visa applications. The administration is also targeting organized networks that allegedly market travel packages—including medical care and transport—to facilitate these births, which officials describe as an attempt to “sell U.S. citizenship.”

The crackdown, supported by the Department of Homeland Security, includes the use of artificial intelligence and big data to track travel histories and detect fraudulent patterns. Consequences for those identified include immediate visa revocation, potential deportation, and permanent inadmissibility to the United States. Legal experts note that affected individuals may seek recourse through class-action lawsuits or immigration waivers.
