United States sanctions two more International Criminal Court officials

The United States Department of State has announced sanctions against two additional International Criminal Court (ICC) officials: ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye. These individuals join 11 other ICC officials previously targeted by the U.S. government.

The sanctions are part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration to dismantle what it describes as a threat to U.S. sovereignty posed by the ICC. The State Department has accused the court of mandate overreach and unfair treatment of Israel, particularly following the issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant, as well as former Hamas commander Mohammed Deif.

The ICC, based in The Hague, serves as a court of last resort for investigating genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. In response to the measures, the ICC stated it “deplores the announcement” and characterized the sanctions as a “flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution.”

Legal challenges have emerged following these actions, with several sanctioned ICC judges suing the administration over asset freezes and travel bans. Additionally, human rights organizations have filed lawsuits claiming the sanctions infringe upon constitutional rights.
