United States sees rise in democratic socialism among voters

Political trends in the United States indicate a growing shift toward democratic socialism, particularly among younger demographics. Recent polling suggests that a third of Democrats and democratic-leaning voters now identify as democratic socialists.

Data from 2025 shows a divergence in public opinion: a Gallup poll reported that two-thirds of Democrats held a positive view of socialism, while only 42% held a positive view of capitalism. Furthermore, a Harvard Youth survey noted that support for capitalism among 18- to 29-year-olds fell to 39%, down from 45% in 2020.

This movement is characterized by calls for affordable housing, universal healthcare, free higher education, increased union power, and higher taxes on the wealthy. While Republican leaders attempt to frame these shifts as a threat similar to historical socialist regimes, the influence of these policies is becoming more mainstream through various local elections and figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders.
