US political shift toward democratic socialism

Political trends in the United States show a growing shift toward democratic socialism, particularly among younger demographics and within the Democratic Party. Earlier data indicated that a third of Democrats identified as democratic socialists, with 2025 polling showing that two-thirds of Democrats held a positive view of socialism compared to 42% for capitalism.

Recent CBS News/YouGov polling highlights a pronounced ideological divide. Approximately 58% of Democrats now view socialism favorably, while only 32% view capitalism favorably. This preference is notably higher among college-educated Democrats at 71%.

These findings have sparked internal friction within the Democratic Party. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) reacted to the poll results on social media, labeling them “lunacy” and warning that the party is “becoming the party of socialism.” Fetterman identified himself as a “proud free market capitalist.”

While Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates have secured victories in various primaries during the 2026 election cycle, the broader electorate remains divided. Among the general public, 46% view capitalism favorably compared to 35% for socialism, and 66% maintain that the free market is good for the US economy. However, data suggests a disconnect regarding specific policies, as a majority of Democrats, Republicans, and independents surveyed expressed support for government price controls.
