United States shifts cartel strategy toward diplomacy and financial disruption

The United States has reportedly shifted its strategy regarding Mexican drug cartels, moving away from potential unilateral military actions, such as airstrikes, in favor of increased diplomatic cooperation with Mexican authorities. This change in approach aims to respect national sovereignty while leveraging shared intelligence and law enforcement capabilities to dismantle criminal organizations.

Simultaneously, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that current administration policies are disrupting the financial flows of these cartels. Data from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) indicates a significant decrease in suspicious transactions linked to human smuggling. While the previous administration saw an average of over 7,000 such reports per quarter, the frequency dropped to fewer than 2,000 reports per quarter by the latter half of 2025.

Additionally, Department of Homeland Security reports indicate a reduction in catch-and-release incidents along the U.S.-Mexico border compared to previous years.
