United States to end health funding in Zimbabwe in September

The United States is set to end its funding for health programs in Zimbabwe at the end of September. This decision follows the rejection of a proposed bilateral health memorandum of understanding by Zimbabwe, reportedly due to concerns regarding a clause on the sharing of sensitive health data.

U.S. Ambassador Pamela Tremont stated that Washington intends to shift its relationship with Zimbabwe from one focused on humanitarian and health aid toward one centered on economic, commercial, and investment opportunities. This move is part of a broader U.S. strategy to link health assistance to country-to-country bilateral agreements.

In response to the impending funding withdrawal, Zimbabwe has received a final shipment of 43,000 doses of lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection. Dr. Owen Mugurungi, director of the AIDS and TB unit for the Ministry of Health and Child Care, noted that this consignment may be the last provided by the American government.

Zimbabwean authorities are now looking to secure additional resources from the Global Fund and are discussing the mobilization of local resources to maintain HIV and other disease response programs. Officials are also considering expanding access to treatments through private pharmacies to reduce reliance on clinics.
