US health aid withdrawal from Zimbabwe

Overview

The United States has announced it will end health support programs in Zimbabwe by the end of September 2026. This decision follows the collapse of negotiations for a five-year bilateral health agreement valued at approximately US$367 million. The negotiations reportedly stalled due to disagreements over a data-sharing clause, with Zimbabwean officials expressing concerns regarding the protection of sensitive health information.

U.S. Ambassador Pamela Tremont stated that the bilateral relationship will shift from a focus on health and humanitarian assistance toward “broader economic, trade, and investment opportunities.”

In anticipation of the funding withdrawal, Zimbabwe received a final shipment of 43,000 doses of lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection. Dr. Owen Mugurungi, director of the AIDS and TB unit for the Ministry of Health and Child Care, noted that this consignment may be the last provided by the American government. To mitigate the impact on HIV and other disease response programs, Zimbabwean authorities are looking to secure resources from the Global Fund and are discussing the mobilization of local funds and the use of private pharmacies.
