United States urges protection of Guatemala institutions from illicit financing

The United States Embassy in Guatemala has called for the strengthening of institutions to remain free from the influence of drug trafficking networks and illicit financing ahead of upcoming elections. The U.S. position emphasizes the need for transparency and merit-based selection in the appointment of the new Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC), the body responsible for auditing public funds.

Jorgan Andrews, the Chargé d'Affaires, has been meeting with representatives involved in the selection process to reaffirm U.S. support for a transparent appointment. This diplomatic intervention occurs as the Guatemalan Congress prepares to elect the new comptroller. Congress President Luis Contreras has scheduled the election for October 6 and 8, following a list of six candidates provided by the Nomination Commission. The process has faced internal tension, including a session on September 29 that failed to reach a quorum due to debates over the voting schedule.
