Univé restricts insurance for several emerging car brands
The Dutch insurance company Univé has implemented restrictions on insuring several emerging automobile brands due to concerns regarding repair infrastructure and spare parts availability. The company is refusing full coverage (comprehensive insurance) for nine specific brands, including Hongqi, Changan, Voyah, KGM, Leapmotor, VinFast, Jaecoo, MHero, and Omoda.
For other manufacturers, such as Dongfeng, Lucida, Firefly, Nio, and Zeekr, Univé will only offer mandatory third-party liability insurance, denying coverage for damages to the owner's own vehicle. Univé manager Henkjan Matthijs stated that gaps in technical support, long delivery times for parts, and an insufficient workshop network make the costs of even minor repairs unpredictable.
While many of the affected brands are Chinese, the policy also impacts manufacturers from other regions, such as the American brand Lucid, South Korean manufacturer KGM, and Vietnamese company VinFast. Established brands like BYD and MG are not affected, as they have already developed robust logistics and service networks in Europe. This decision is specific to Univé and does not represent a broader market ban in the Netherlands.
