Universal Studios Hollywood to add sound barriers amid coaster noise complaints

Universal Studios Hollywood is facing noise complaints from residents of Toluca Lake regarding its new outdoor roller coaster, ‘Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift’. While initial testing with empty vehicles was quiet, technical rehearsals involving riders have led to significant outcry from neighbors due to the sound of passengers screaming.

Residents have described the noise as “disturbing” and “intrusive,” with one neighbor telling the LA Times, “You think something is happening. Like someone is getting murdered out there.” The coaster, which reaches speeds of 72 mph, is situated on a hillside overlooking residential areas and the Lakeside Golf Course, providing little natural sound buffer.

In response, Los Angeles City Councilmember Adrin Nazarian announced that Universal will install two additional sound barriers. Although the park maintains that the ride currently meets sound ordinance requirements and has already incorporated sound-shield panels and reduction technology, construction of the new barriers is expected to be completed by early September.
