Britney Spears biopic enters development with Liz Meriwether

Development is officially underway for a biopic based on Britney Spears’ 2023 memoir, ‘The Woman in Me’. Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the project following a competitive bidding process involving several major studios.

Screenwriter Liz Meriwether, known for ‘New Girl’, is currently in the early stages of writing the script. Meriwether expressed that now is the “right time” to revisit Spears’ life, noting the unique intersection of media attention and public scrutiny the singer faced during her career and subsequent conservatorship. She has been immersing herself in Spears’ musical catalog to capture the era accurately.

The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu. Chu has indicated that Spears herself is expected to be “very involved” in the production. While no official casting has been announced, speculation has emerged regarding potential actresses, with prediction markets currently highlighting Olivia Holt and Sabrina Carpenter as frontrunners.
