Britney Spears biopic film development

Overview

Universal Pictures has begun development on a biopic based on Britney Spears’ 2023 memoir, ‘The Woman in Me’. The project is set to be directed by Jon M. Chu, with Liz Meriwether writing the script. Early reports indicated that Spears might be “very involved” in the production.

As the project progresses, director Jon M. Chu stated that casting is not currently a priority, despite receiving numerous audition submissions. He described the screenplay being developed by Meriwether as ‘incredible, profound, [and] beautiful’. The film is being produced by Marc Platt.

At the opening of the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, Chu provided a further update, noting the project remains in its early stages. He emphasized that the production is currently focused on the screenplay, stating the priority is “trying to get the story right” before finalizing the cast. While Chu noted he is not yet considering actors for the lead role despite receiving hundreds of audition submissions from around the world, he indicated that Spears will maintain an active role in the production, though he remained vague regarding the specific extent of her creative involvement.

Recent reports indicate that casting discussions have gained momentum. Sydney Sweeney has reportedly emerged as a frontrunner to portray the pop icon. While a final decision has not been made, industry insiders suggest Sweeney is a primary candidate due to her profile and range. Other names mentioned in casting discussions include Millie Bobby Brown, Addison Rae, Bailee Madison, and Kylie Schultz.
