Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas launches regional education units and awards protected status to Cuera Tamaulipeca

On 9 June 2026 the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) presented Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) certificates to seven artisans producing the traditional Cuera Tamaulipeca in Tula, Tamaulipas. The ceremony was attended by UAT rector Dámaso Anaya Alvarado, IMPI representative Roxana Aguirre Elizondo, state SME sub‑secretary Mariana Álvarez Quero and municipal president René Lara Cisneros. The certifications aim to safeguard the cultural heritage of the leather garment and to open international market channels for local producers.

Earlier, on 5 June 2026 UAT expanded its academic outreach through Regional Knowledge Transfer Units (URTC) located in the municipalities of González, Jiménez, San Fernando and Tula. The units provide online high‑school, undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programs, equipped with smart classrooms, internet access and personalized faculty support, in cooperation with municipal governments.
