UAT researchers develop portable device for early breast cancer detection
Researchers at the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) have developed a portable, non-invasive system for the early detection of breast tumors. Led by Dr. Alberto Reyna Maldonado from the Unidad Académica Multidisciplinaria Reynosa Rodhe (UAMRR), the project involves a robotic prototype equipped with sensors that use microwave imaging.
The device is designed to be economical, safe, and non-invasive, utilizing minimal radiation levels that do not affect human health. In laboratory experiments, the system proved highly effective at detecting tumors smaller than one millimeter, which is critical for timely medical intervention. The technology works by analyzing physical and electrical changes in human tissue through microwave signals, which are then processed by an algorithm to produce an image of the tumor.
