UAT student hospitalized after violent hazing ritual in Tamaulipas
An 18-year-old student, Ángel Tadeo Rubio Ortiz, was hospitalized after a violent hazing ritual at the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics in Ciudad Victoria. The victim reportedly suffered physical assaults and was subjected to humiliation, including being covered in animal blood, excrement, and other substances.
According to reports, the student was forced to consume a habanero pepper despite having a known severe allergy, which led to a seizure and loss of consciousness. While university officials suggested the medical emergency may have been caused by heatstroke, the victim's family and local reports indicate the ingestion of the pepper was a primary factor in his critical condition.
The Tamaulipas State Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation for intentional injuries to identify the participating students and determine legal responsibilities. The UAT has also launched an internal investigation through its University Rights Ombudsman to address the incident and the potential omission of faculty oversight.
