Universidad de la República suspends classes following attempted femicide

The Central Governing Council of the Universidad de la República (Udelar) has suspended all classes and non-essential academic activities until Tuesday, September 8. This decision follows an attempted femicide that occurred on September 1 at the Faculty of Medicine.

The suspension aims to facilitate institutional reflection, care, and reorganization in response to the shock felt by the university community. The university leadership acknowledged existing challenges and insufficiencies in institutional responses to gender-based violence.

As part of its response, the Open Commission on Equity and Gender (CAEG) has been tasked with a comprehensive review of policies regarding violence, harassment, and discrimination. This review will include evaluating mandatory training, early risk detection, and support strategies for whistleblowers. The commission has 60 days to develop a concrete action plan. Additionally, all university services must submit reports on their current resources and budgets dedicated to addressing gender violence.
