Universidad Nacional de la Educación project presented in Uruguay
The project to create the Universidad Nacional de la Educación (UNED) was presented in Minas, Uruguay, during the Day of Public Education. The initiative aims to establish a third public university in the country, specifically designed to strengthen and professionalize the training of teachers, professors, and social educators.
Gabriel Quirici, the national director of Education from the Ministry of Education and Culture, stated that the proposal seeks to integrate training, research, and academic extension. The university is intended to have a nationwide presence, with a plan for 33 locations distributed across all 19 departments. This structure aims to provide a university-level framework for existing institutions such as the Institutes of Teacher Training (IFD) and Regional Centers for Teachers (CERP).
According to Quirici, approximately 65% of students in these fields come from the interior of the country, making the project a key component of educational decentralization. Because the creation of a new autonomous entity requires special majorities in Parliament, officials emphasized that the initiative is intended as a national project requiring broad political consensus.
