Uruguay national education university proposal
Overview
In Uruguay, a proposal has been presented to establish the Universidad Nacional de la Educación (UNED) to serve as the country’s third public university. The project aims to professionalize the training of teachers, professors, and social educators by integrating research, academic extension, and training.
Gabriel Quirici, the national director of Education from the Ministry of Education and Culture, noted that the university is intended to have a nationwide presence with 33 locations across all 19 departments. This structure is designed to provide a university-level framework for existing institutions like the Institutes of Teacher Training (IFD) and Regional Centers for Teachers (CERP).
Because approximately 65% of students in these fields reside in the country's interior, the initiative is viewed as a vital component of educational decentralization. However, officials emphasized that creating the new autonomous entity will require broad political consensus to achieve the special majorities needed in Parliament.
