Universities in Argentina and Mexico respond to security threats

Security alerts were triggered at two universities following threats of violence.

At the Universidad de la Cuenca del Plata (UCP) in Corrientes, Argentina, an email circulated among students and faculty claiming an imminent massacre. The message, signed by a group calling itself ‘984 Mentalyl’, threatened the use of an arsenal of weapons and explosives. Authorities and security forces have increased campus patrols and are working to identify the sender to determine if the threat is credible. No injuries or weapons have been found.

In Saltillo, Mexico, the Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) activated security protocols after digital messages and a video allegedly showing a firearm circulated among students. The messages reportedly involved a student threatening to ‘settle scores’ with another. The institution reported that activities continued normally following a preventive inspection of the facilities, and cyber police are investigating the digital content.
