Universities in Chile and Nicaragua launch sustainability initiatives

The Catholic University of Maule in Chile reaffirmed its scientific commitment to the UNESCO‑aspiring Pillanmapu Geopark, bringing together a Scientific Committee, a Technical Committee and an Executive Management Committee to develop a shared governance model ahead of UNESCO’s evaluation. Coordinators highlighted that the collaboration "allows the creation of joint workspaces among institutions to build a common vision for the territory" and will help integrate the geopark into the global network of UNESCO Geoparks.

In Nicaragua, the Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales organized a campus‑wide reforestation day, planting ornamental and fruit trees across its green spaces. Students, faculty and members of the environmental brigade took part, emphasizing that "each tree planted represents a concrete action in favour of nature." The activity is part of the Green Universities programme and supports the country’s national education strategy on environment and nature.
