University sustainability initiatives in Latin America

In mid‑July 2026, universities in Chile and Nicaragua announced new sustainability actions. The Catholic University of Maule in Chile organized a governance structure to support the UNESCO‑aspiring Pillanmapu Geopark, aiming to integrate the site into the global geopark network. Simultaneously, Nicaragua’s Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales held a campus‑wide tree‑planting day as part of its Green Universities programme.

Two weeks later, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) in Chile launched a regional sustainable‑tourism project for businesses in Concón and Mantagua. Backed by a regional innovation fund, the programme delivered diagnostics, carbon‑ and water‑footprint assessments, technical assistance, and training to more than 30 tourism and gastronomy firms, helping several secure financing for energy‑efficiency upgrades.

Together, the snapshots show university‑driven sustainability efforts expanding from campus and heritage‑site initiatives to broader community and industry support across the region.
