Universities of Wisconsin propose $115M for healthcare training and research

The Universities of Wisconsin have announced two major budget proposals aimed at addressing the state’s healthcare needs and advancing medical research.

The first initiative, titled ‘Healthy Wisconsin’, requests a $90 million state investment to train 35,000 new healthcare professionals over the next decade. Interim President Renée Wachter stated the goal is to improve healthcare access across the state, noting that the 65-plus population is the fastest-growing demographic in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Hospital Association estimates that healthcare demand will increase by 10 percent above current levels by 2040.

The second proposal, ‘Cures for Tomorrow’, seeks a $25 million state investment to advance research and treatments for diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

The full 2026-27 budget proposal is scheduled for a vote by the UW Board of Regents next week, with the formal budget to be presented to the Wisconsin state Legislature and governor in the fall.
