Universities of Wisconsin budget and tuition proposals

The Universities of Wisconsin have introduced several major budget proposals aimed at addressing state healthcare needs and student affordability.

To address healthcare demands, the system proposed two initiatives: ‘Healthy Wisconsin’, requesting $90 million to train 35,000 healthcare professionals to meet rising demand, and ‘Cures for Tomorrow’, seeking $25 million for medical research into diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. Interim President Renée Wachter noted that the goal is to improve access as the 65-plus population is the fastest-growing demographic in the state.

Regarding affordability, the universities announced a ‘4-Year Tuition Pledge’. This plan offers to freeze tuition for the 2027-29 biennium and cap subsequent increases at the rate of inflation, contingent upon a $190 million state investment. Officials noted that without such funding, inflationary pressures and mandated payroll increases would necessitate hikes. In the interim, the Board of Regents approved a 3.3% tuition increase for the 2026-2027 academic year, alongside increases for housing, dining, and mandatory fees.

Additionally, the ‘Wisconsin Work and Learn’ program was introduced, which seeks to eliminate tuition for in-state students from families earning at or below the median household income in exchange for participation in work, internships, apprenticeships, or career preparation.
