University mental health initiatives and new Spanish regulations

In Spain, Royal Decree 855/2026 has established new mandates for universities, requiring them to provide free and accessible psychological and mental health services. Under the new Organic Law of the University System, both public and private institutions must maintain specialized units for mental health, disability support, and equality. While campus psychologists act as a bridge to public health services rather than a replacement, universities have six months from the decree's effective date to implement protocols for preventing suicide, harassment, and cyberbullying.

Academic strategies are also being emphasized to support student well-being. Research from the University of Zaragoza highlights the role of educators in fostering emotional support through open communication, empathy, and stress-reduction techniques in the classroom.

In Argentina, the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste (UNNE) is conducting its second annual mental health awareness campaign. The initiative, organized by the Labor Welfare Area, includes workshops on psychological first aid and academic stress to support students and staff throughout October.
