University of Arizona suspends Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity
The University of Arizona has suspended the activities of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity following allegations of sexual assault by a sorority member. The student reported that she was assaulted by two men at the fraternity house in Tucson during the night of August 26.
According to search warrant records, the victim stated she had consensually kissed one of the men earlier in the evening but woke up in a dark room being sexually assaulted. She reported physical symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, which may indicate strangulation. One of the accused men reportedly acknowledged having sex with the student but claimed it was consensual.
The fraternity was already on probation due to previous reports of hazing. University officials stated the organization presents a “substantial risk to members of the university community.” The Sigma Phi Epsilon national organization has suspended the individuals involved while investigations continue.
