University of Arizona fraternity misconduct investigations

Overview

The University of Arizona has escalated disciplinary actions against its Greek life organizations following reports of misconduct. The situation began with the suspension of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity due to allegations of severe hazing rituals, including forcing new members to consume live goldfish and large quantities of alcohol, as well as subjecting recruits to “screaming, degradation, and threats.” Following an influx of misconduct reports, the university expanded its response by placing all chapters of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) on interim suspension. Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman characterized the concerns as “egregious,” noting that investigations were underway for approximately half of the university’s 21 IFC chapters. Allegations included hazing, physical assault, drug and alcohol usage, and the creation of unsafe environments, with some cases potentially subject to criminal probes.

More recently, the university imposed an activities suspension on the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity following allegations that a sorority member was sexually assaulted by two men at the fraternity house on August 26. The student reported that after drinking and consensually kissing one man, she woke up to being assaulted by two men. According to search warrant records, she reported feeling a man’s breath on her face and experienced difficulty swallowing the following morning, which may indicate strangulation. One of the accused men acknowledged having sex with the student but claimed it was consensual and denied a second man was involved. The university stated the organization poses a “substantial risk to members of the university community,” and the suspension prohibits the chapter from hosting, attending, or sponsoring any organizational activities. Sigma Phi Epsilon’s national organization has suspended the individuals involved pending the investigation.
