University of Benin Teaching Hospital launches medical projects and outreach
The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has launched over 12 infrastructural and medical projects aimed at revitalizing the 50-year-old institution. Under the leadership of Chief Medical Director Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, these developments include the establishment of a Special Investigation Unit, an expanded Accident and Emergency waiting area, and a modern police post to enhance security.
In conjunction with these upgrades, UBTH conducted a two-day free medical outreach program that provided healthcare services to approximately 5,000 residents in Udo and surrounding communities within the Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State. The initiative utilized the hospital’s newly renovated Comprehensive Health Centre (CHC) in Udo.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare commended the hospital's efforts. Permanent Secretary Dr. Daju Kachollom, represented by Dr. Philip Ugbodaga, praised the outreach as a practical way to bring quality medical services to underserved and rural populations. The ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining these new facilities and adhering to professional standards to ensure long-term community health benefits.
