University of Benin Teaching Hospital development
Overview
The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has initiated several infrastructural and medical developments to revitalize the institution. Initially, the hospital launched over 12 projects, including the establishment of a Special Investigation Unit, an expanded Accident and Emergency area, and a modern police post. Alongside these upgrades, the hospital conducted a two-day free medical outreach program serving approximately 5,000 residents in the Ovia South-West Local Government Area.
Following these developments, UBTH commissioned a new drug testing centre, the first of its kind in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone. The facility is designed to detect various substances—such as amphetamines, cannabis, and fentanyl—to facilitate immediate medical intervention for substance abuse. The centre was unveiled during the hospital’s 2nd Special Intervention and Stakeholders Workshop, involving representatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigeria Police Force.
