University of Cambridge researchers identify brain pathways for weight loss
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have identified two distinct brain pathways involving the GIPR receptor that can influence weight loss. According to a study published in the journal Nature Metabolism, the two strategies—activating or blocking the receptor—work through different regions of the brain.
Activating the GIPR receptor reduces food intake primarily through the area postrema in the brainstem, which is linked to appetite and nausea. Conversely, blocking the GIPR receptor in the hypothalamus appears to remove a biological “brake” on signals that help control eating.
The study, conducted using genetically modified mice, suggests that these two approaches can be complementary. Specifically, blocking the receptor in the hypothalamus may enhance the effectiveness of medications that target other pathways, such as GLP-1R, to promote weight loss. The next phase of research will determine if these mechanisms observed in mice are applicable to humans.
