The study suggests that activating the receptor in the brainstem's area postrema reduces food intake by influencing appetite and nausea. In contrast, blocking the receptor in the hypothalamus may remove a biological “brake” on signals that control eating.
Researchers noted that these two strategies could be complementary, suggesting that blocking the receptor in the hypothalamus might enhance the effectiveness of medications targeting other pathways, such as GLP-1R. Future research will focus on whether these mechanisms observed in mice are applicable to humans.
