University of Chile launches Croatian language and culture courses

The University of Chile has launched new international educational courses focused on Croatia and Romania. The initiative, led by the university’s Office of International Affairs and the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, aims to introduce students and staff to new languages and cultures.

The first offering is a free course titled ‘Introduction to Croatian Language: Approaches Through Culture,’ which runs from August 11 to October 6. Taught by lecturer Lucija Bojkić, the curriculum covers basic pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and conversation, while also exploring Croatian history, literature, and traditions. The program utilizes practical exercises, role-playing, and group work to explore the geographical and artistic links between Croatia and Chile.

This initiative follows a long history of migration, as approximately 200,000 people of Croatian descent reside in Chile. The Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities currently offers instruction in more than 16 languages alongside Spanish.
