University of Chile's UDP Leads National Photographic Archive Initiative

The University’s General Studies, Archives and Culture Directorate, through Cenfoto UDP, has become a national reference for the preservation, research and public diffusion of photographic collections. Since taking on the task in 2001, the university has expanded its archive from 70,000 images to millions of documents, especially after acquiring the La Nación fund in 2013‑14. Director Samuel Salgado Tello highlighted the proactive approach, describing the university as a "national archive" that continuously digitises collections and collaborates with external organisations. The effort is showcased each August during the national Photography Month, with ongoing exhibitions and research projects that underline the institution’s role in cultural heritage.

The initiative also emphasizes interdisciplinary links within the university, fostering new curatorial projects and public engagement through exhibitions and scholarly activities.
