University of Colima brings STEM workshops to rural students
The University of Colima has launched the “Vocaciones Primarias” program, a series of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) workshops designed for children in rural communities. The first edition of the initiative is currently serving 55 students from first to sixth grade at the “Año de Juárez” rural primary school in La Nogalera, Comala.
Coordinated by researcher Sara Guillermina Centeno Leija from the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (FIME), the program utilizes a team of volunteer researchers and students from the faculties of Engineering, Sciences, and Chemical Sciences. The workshops, scheduled to run from September 21 to October 26, consist of six weekly sessions focused on practical activities related to the students' daily environments.
The project aims to spark scientific curiosity, encourage interest in learning, and demonstrate that students can pursue future careers in scientific and technological fields. The initiative is a collaborative effort between FIME researchers at the Coquimatlán campus and the school's director, Edna Yaratzeth Durán Naranjo.
